SUMMARY:Transgender Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:For a week in November events and protests will highlight the voices of trans activists and organisers in most capital cities. This is an opportunity for the sex worker movement to stand up alongside other movements\, calling for an end to incarceration of black and trans folk\, decriminalisation of sex work\, and justice for members of our community who died in custody. \nVeronica Baxter was a black trans sex worker who died in custody in 2009. Her passing and subsequent coronial inquest are an ongoing reminder of the ongoing physical and political violence perpetuated by the colony against black and trans bodies. \nCJ Palmer is a trans woman living with HIV who experienced “manifestly excessive” sentencing in 2018 (reduced on appeal) and held in a maximum security male prison including in solitary confinement for four years. After release she was sent immediately to an immigration detention facility. In 2023 her lawyers challenged her deportation. CJ’s strong and lasting connections to the HIV\, trans and sex worker communities were expressed. \nBoth Veronica and CJ were denied access to hormones while incarcerated in male prisons.

SUMMARY:International Drug Users Day
DESCRIPTION:This is a global day of action\, where many organisations\, advocates\, peers and those whose lives have been impacted by illicit drug use show solidarity in raising awareness and showcasing the importance of community-led harm reduction\, the power of peer involvement\, the harms of drug criminalisation and to advocate for the health and human rights of people who use drugs. \nHeld annually\, 1 November remembers the movements and protests against the significant lack of and access to treatments and services for people who use drugs; particularly in terms of inadequate public health policy and response to the disproportionate rates of blood borne viruses such as hepatitis and HIV amongst communities of PWUD globally who remain highly stigmatised and marginalised populations. \n

SUMMARY:International Whores Day
DESCRIPTION:When we occupy the churches \nYou are scandalised \nReligious bigots! \nYou who threatened us with hell \nWe have come to eat at your table \nAt Saint-Nizier \n\nLyon sex worker grievances came to a head on 2 June 1975\, when around 100–150 sex workers took refuge in the Church of Saint-Nizier in Lyon and immediately hung from the steeple a large banner on which was written ‘Our children do not want their mothers to go to jail’. Aided by young curate\, activist and aspiring journalist Christian Delorme (audio recording of an interview\, 11 June\, 2012)\, the sex workers launched a media campaign explaining that they had occupied the church in desperation following months of failed negotiations in an attempt to prevent the threatened imprisonment of around 10 women facing multiple charges for ‘incitement of debauchery.\n\nFrom The 1975 French sex workers’ revolt: A narrative of influence
