Support for sex workers experiencing exploitation

Are you being treated fairly at work? You may be experiencing workplace exploitation if:

  • You are forced to work too many hours
  • You are not allowed to take breaks
  • Your boss does not pay you, or pays you the wrong amount, or takes too much money back from your pay
  • Your boss pressures you to provide services you’re not comfortable with
  • You’re not allowed to leave your workplace, or you’re forced to stay somewhere crowded, dirty or unsafe
  • Your boss takes away your passport or identity documents and does not give them back to you when asked
  • Your boss threatens to cancel your visa, report you to authorities, or uses your visa status to scare you.

If you are experiencing workplace exploitation, you can get support from your local sex worker organisation.

Scarlet Alliance can also help through the Additional Referral Pathway (ARP). This program is a way for people to access support if they have experienced or are at risk of extreme forms of exploitation known as trafficking or modern slavery. The ARP is free, and you do not have to talk to the police. You can find more information about types of workplace exploitation at the Red Cross Work Right Hub.

The program can help you access:

If you are a temporary migrant, you may also be eligible for the Workplace Justice Visa (also known as a 408 visa).
